System / Maintenance mode

Maintenance mode#

Temporarily closes the site to visitors and shows a message instead. It is useful during a larger content change, a move to a new version or any work that would leave the site broken.

Find it under Nastavení → Režim údržby (the Web group; the Nastavení link at the bottom of the left column). Only people with permission for this screen see it.

What happens during maintenance#

Who What they see
A visitor on an address that is not in the allowed list a page with the message. The site answers with code 503 (temporarily unavailable), so search engines come back later and do not drop the pages from the index
A visitor on an allowed address the normal site
The administration, the Api and automatic jobs (cron) keep running

Only the public site is closed. You can sign in to the administration and switch the mode off at any time.

Settings#

Field Note
Probíhá údržba (maintenance in progress) switch: on = the site is closed
Hláška (message) text for visitors, one per language (language tabs, the first is the default language). An empty message uses the default language's message; if that is empty too, the text "Probíhá údržba" is shown
Povolené IP adresy (allowed IP addresses) addresses that see the site during maintenance: one address per line (192.168.1.10, 2001:db8::1) or a range (192.168.1.0/24). Text after # is a comment

Below the address list you see your IP address and the Přidat moji IP (add my IP) button, which inserts it into the list.

Procedure: close the site for the time of the changes#

  1. Open Nastavení → Režim údržby.
  2. Write the message for visitors, in every language the site has.
  3. Click Přidat moji IP. Also add the addresses of colleagues who should check the site during the changes.
  4. Switch Probíhá údržba on and click Uložit (save).
  5. Open the site from another device or network (for example a phone off Wi-Fi). You should see the message. From an allowed address you see the site normally.
  6. When the changes are done, switch it off and save. The site is available to everyone again.

Without your own IP address it will not switch on

If your current address is not in the allowed list, the form is not saved and the administration says you would not see the site yourself. Add your address and save again. The administration is not blocked either way; you just could not check the public site.

Your address may change

Home and mobile connections often get a different address. If yours changes, you will see the message like any visitor. You can still sign in to the administration and add the address.

An invalid line is rejected

A line that is neither a valid address nor a range is rejected by the form with an error. Such an entry would not give anyone access anyway.

A change applies at once

Switching on and off shows at the next visit to the site; no cache has to expire first.

Maintenance is on, but you did not switch it on#

The server administrator can also switch maintenance mode on when deploying a new version. The screen then shows a notice above the switch that maintenance is on outside the administration and is switched off elsewhere. The switch has no effect on it; agree the switching off with the administrator.
